History of the SS Carl D. Bradley: A Tragic Tale of Great Lakes Shipping

The SS Carl D. Bradley, a renowned Great Lakes freighter, played a vital role in transporting limestone between ports from 1927 to 1958. Regarded as one of the largest and fastest vessels of its kind, the ship met a tragic fate on November 18, 1958, when it sank during a severe storm on Lake Michigan, claiming the lives of 33 crew members.

The disaster had far-reaching consequences, prompting significant changes in the regulation of shipping practices on the Great Lakes. However, its most profound impact was felt in Rogers City, Michigan, a close-knit town with only 3,800 residents, where 23 of the Bradley's crew members hailed from. The loss reverberated through the community, leaving lasting scars on the families and the town's collective memory.
